I walked down to the ocean last night

And watched for the rising tide.

A storm was blowing in from the west

That matched what I could not hide.

A wave of sadness and loss rolled in

From heartbreak over the years.

They tried to erode the walls of my soul

With a sea of helpless tears.

The winds blew fierce across the waves

And salt spray hung in the air.

I fought to keep my body up right,

As the rain pelted my hair.

The storms of life had battered my heart

And my spirit relentlessly.

I was exhausted in body and soul.

I wanted to be free.

The storms died down and the sun came out

And the ocean was calm once more.

My soul found rest in love’s sweet light,

And I felt my spirit soar.

When I was just a girl of eight,

I stretched out flat upon the ground,

And on my back I saw the world

With a blue sky, heard natural sounds.

Found on Pinterest on 7-17-15. Days of grace-cherie.

I felt my soul fly out of me

And land on top a soft white cloud.

I embraced the universe

And heard an angel laugh out loud.

All around me Beauty breathed

And blew sweet hope into my chest.

She wrapped me in serenity,

And gave me a much-needed rest.

The scent of sweet tender leaves

Moved gently through the tall oak trees.

Found on Pinterest on 6-13-16.

The smell of Honeysuckle blooms

Drifted across the morning breeze.

I saw one-hundred flowers dance

And lift their faces to the sun.

They smiled and bowed their heads in prayer

And gave thanks to the Holy One.

In me there grew such ecstasy.

It blew the storms of life aside.

It gave me respite for a day

And brought back hope that had died.

Peace comes to me in the morning

And alights soft as an angel’s wing.

Joy fills my heart to overflowing

And compels my soul to sing.

Love flows through me to my family

And out to a hurting world.

Patience teaches me to wait

For God’s plan to be unfurled.

Faith grows as time goes on,

And I leave the world behind.

I learn how to be more caring

With Jesus inside my mind.

Hope rises within my soul

Despite the gloom and the darkness.

For I know all of us can reflect

The light of God’s great goodness.

There are those who believe

We do not have a spirit within.

But I know it exists,

For I have seen it move in me.

I have seen it move in others, too.

I see it’s results like we see the wind’s.

The wind leaves traces where its been–

I feel the wind, but I’ve never seen it.

Leaves move as the wind blows through.

I see the spirit dancing in a child’s eyes,

Or in faces glowing in the moon light.

I feel the spirit when I freely give.

Or when I love others more than me.

And when I pray for those who need a friend.

With every breath I take, with all I am,

I feel the spirit as it moves in me.

                           Loss

Darkness comes and lights upon my spirit.

Spirit weeps for dreams that fade and die.

Love that never comes to find fruition

Fragment’s self and leaves me wondering why?

Life and death still struggle in my body.

Pain is like a long forgotten word.

I am left bereft of love, emotion.

Life remains to be some what absurd.

                                                        Struggling

There are  four forces at war within us as we struggle to manage our lives in a more productive way. We can feel these forces tugging at us and even influencing us to a certain degree. Sometimes we can change to what degree each force controls us and sometimes we are swept by a tide out to sea before we even know something is happening.

These four forces are: the past, the present, the future, and the Spiritual Life Force that lies within each one of us: that part which drives us to become more than what we are, and which can show itself as being good, caring, productive, contributing to society, moral, and having the need to leave something of value behind for those who are struggling too. But it can also show itself as getting rid of the good, being selfish, and wanting to be productive  only if it meets its needs.

Each of us have this spiritual life force inside us. We are not 100% one way or another, but most of us generally gravitate toward living our lives one way or the other. Many things influence this such as education, society, groups we interact with, and materials we have read.  Family is a big influence as well as the people we choose to love.

The past is a force that  consciously or unconsciously influences us. Our childhoods give us many tools to navigate within a world that now continually changes. We learn from our parents or other influential people how to treat others, how to get what we need or want, how to feel close to others and open ourselves to the community we live in. We learn to care about others or we learn only to care about those who can give us what we want. We learn how to work or not work, how to give or not give, and how to trust or not trust. Hopefully we learn basic living skills in order to become autonomous and take care of ourselves.

Children learn how to cope with the stresses they encounter getting through childhood and adolescence. Some of the coping skills that worked then may no longer work when they are adults. If their childhoods were good, the chances are high that they learned the world was a good place to live in, it is good to love others, be productive, contribute to society and to strive to live moral lives. Those that came from cold, neglectful, abusive homes were not as lucky and will struggle all of their lives to change it if they can. They received  incorrect instructions for how to navigate life. A lot of them have to be educated and need to practice new skills.

A problem occurs when the past bleeds into the present through the power of transference, flashbacks, or other stimuli in the environment, triggering dysfunctional behavior patterns learned as a child and resurrecting old feeling states. Life then becomes harder to navigate.

The present is also a powerful  force. It lets us know if our struggling has been for nothing or worth something. The present rewards us, for the most part, for all the successful learning we had. The present structures us in the here and now and grounds us in our reality. If our environment is pleasant and rewarding, our lives get better. If losses come, and they come for everyone, life gets harder, and the struggle more clear to others. If too many losses occur  at once, there will be problems in their lives. In some, the struggles  will be great.

The future is a force because it gives us hope that things will change, that all of our lives  will get better. It gives us the chance to look forward to things, to dream, and plan. It imbues us with the power that anything is possible, It helps us feel we can control things, we can effect the outcomes. It is only when hope dies that the struggle becomes real  and that the spiritual life force takes the greatest hit. It can become a great struggle between good and evil.  These four forces do play a significant part in how successful we feel in life.

TENDERLY ROCKED BY THE SPIRIT

My heart was heavy laden,

The past sat on my back.

My feet were slowly moving

And I had lost track

Of All I was or should be.

I knew that I was weary,

And I felt so very tired.

I wanted just to lay down

But my nerves were wired

From feelings held inside me.

I was tired from all the giving;

Tired of pleasing everyone.

I was worn out from the tasks

That I had left undone

Which were waiting just for me.

I do not know what magic

You used to soothe my pain.

Or how you freed  the tears

That fell on me like rain

From eyes long-filled with sorrow.

I know I felt my burdens

Drop gently to the floor.

My muscles unraveled.

My fears went out the door

With no trouble left to borrow.

Your voice was soft and soothing

Like the sounds of a stream.

You calmed the restless feelings

And it all seemed like a dream,

But I knew that it was real.

I was floating on an ocean,

Being rocked by God’s great love.

His arms were strong and tender.

His warmth came from above

And I began to heal.
