There are many poems which touch us through the years. Poetry has the ability to say what we feel. It’s rhythm sometimes comforts us as a child can be comforted in a rocking chair. It lays bare the soul and pretense and pride are burned away by the fires of yesterday. It comforts us when we feel sadness and despair. It inspires us when hope is almost lost. The following poem was a favorite of mine in high school.
THE NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES
The night has a thousand eyes,
And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
With the dying sun.
The mind has a thousand eyes
And the heart but one;
Yet the light of a whole life dies
When love is done.

THE COST OF LOVE
Little girl rocking in a rocking chair
Has strong faith that you’ll be there..
Hoping against hope that love will find
A way to convince you to be kind.
Little girl lost in the woods at night
Searching for you with a lantern light.
So great is her belief that you
Will do the right thing and see this through.
She waited until the sunlight came.
Over and over she called your name.
“Momma, momma, can’t you see.
I’ll love you forever, but you don’t love me.”
