“The hardest task in the world for me is to have faith. I believe in God and I know He is present. My difficulties lie with believing He deems me worthy of His attention when so many others are going through tough times. I have trouble believing He won’t get distracted by some one else. I am aware that having parents and friends who weren’t reliable has left its mark on me. I grew up knowing that if  I believed someone would come and save me, I was in for a big disappointment. I learned the hard way, that it was up to me if I wanted a better life and a satisfying one. That is a comforting way to live when you are young, strong, resourceful, and quick.

The difficulties of having faith become more obvious when old age approaches. Life becomes unpredictable. Illness strikes when you least expect it. Money becomes less plentiful, and friends and family members move or die. Losses start to multiply. Your strength starts to fail and you forget things. It becomes harder and harder to save yourself. You learn that asking for help is a rational thing to do and some tasks are just too difficult. So you learn to pray, and you ride the tough times out. You find out by experience how to adjust to change, and you discover a new level of spirituality. You also take a journey inside yourself to rediscover who you are and where you fit in God’s great design.”

What The World Needs Now.

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS IS LOVE

Found on Facebook Timeline on 1-5-17. Sandra Kring.

Found on Facebook Timeline on 1-5-17. Sandra Kring.

The world is in need of so many things, but what it needs most is love. All around us, we see evidence that this is true. The conflicts in Syria and Iraq, the bombings in Europe, Isis carrying out terrorist attacks in various places around the world, and the divisiveness seen in the US 2016 election. We see it in the language used in discussing politics. Most of all, our lack of love is shown by how we treat people different from us.

We hear the poor called lazy, the disabled made fun of, minorities called ugly names and being classified in terms we would never want to hear being used with us. Being good or decent is seen as being weak. Once we roll around in all this for a time, it starts affecting us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Before long, we begin to pull away, and we yearn for something else.

We yearn for love. We want encouragement, help when our soul is in despair, or our physical needs aren’t being addressed. We want people to care whether we live or die. We want connection with others and we hunger for acts of kindness to revive us when we want to give up.

For love to happen, each one of us needs to become a light blazing in the darkness. We need to reflect love, perform acts of kindness, help others that are less fortunate than us, and have compassion and understanding for those who are different. Our light will cause other lights to shine until the darkness fades away.

MAY THE COMING YEAR BE A GOOD YEAR FOR YOU.

The year 2016 has been a year filled with many positive and negative events. I know 2016 has been difficult for me to plow through. I have had to work through depression and anxiety, come to some kind of acceptance of the chronic illness I now have, and throw out a malfunctioning microwave that made weird sounds and whose rotating plate turned by itself without electricity. I had to call the firemen because smoke was coming out of my house. The firemen were initially hesitant to go in because they wondered whether radiation was present. When I offered to take them on a tour of my house, they told me to stay put and they entered. They agreed it was moving on its own without electricity and took it outside.

In the following six weeks, I fell four times, severe falls, which is highly unusual. The fourth fall was the worst. I tripped over my dog and crashed head first into the dog crate. It took my leg three months to heal, and knocked my brains out for a while. The cat scan revealed I didn’t have a concussion, but I did have a big bump on top of my head. My leg swelled and turned gray and black.

Then a freak windstorm came down and split my big maple tree down the middle in my front yard. It landed on my house. It also took down a big red bud tree in my back yard. I had to call a tree service to remove the debris and a roofer to check my house. The other trees in the neighborhood weren’t touched.

In November, I was in a car accident in which a dodge ram truck ended up on the hood of my small car and totaled it. Somehow, I walked away with just some muscle spasms and sore muscles. I had to buy another car while living on a limited income from social security.

The positive things that happened this year are as follows:

  1. I survived the above. I am still living. God must want me alive for some reason.
  2. I learned I am tougher than I thought.
  3. I started to pray again and became closer to God after the lamentations and the gnashing of my teeth ended.
  4. I learned that it is okay to ask for help at times, and needing help does not mean you are weak. Sometimes, it proves you are smart.
  5. I found out meditation and grounding techniques are helpful when you become stressed.
  6. I started seeing a connection between poor self-care and stress. I’m eating and sleeping better now.
  7. I found value in using Dialectical Behavioral Therapy techniques in learning how to regulate my emotions and thoughts while dealing with all the stress.
  8. I learned how to accept my illness more and ways to deal with all the side effects.
  9. I found out I could love people without losing my identity and self-esteem, to say no more often, and to overcome some of my fears.
  10. I learned that nothing in life is permanent, so take each moment and love as much as you can, do good as much as you can, and work to create some happiness in your life, regardless of life’s circumstances.
  11. I have accepted that I am a good person, an honest person, a forgiving person, and I work hard on improving myself on an ongoing basis.
  12. I learned  good people in the world will help you if you give them a chance.

Despite what life throws at us, good or bad, we can influence whether the year is a positive one. It is not easy when tough things occur. What counts is what we focus on and the techniques we use to deal with stress.

Will you remember me

And how life use to be:

The fun times that we had,

And the ways you made me glad;

The comfort given after tears,

And joy throughout the years;

The shows we saw together,

And the walks in stormy weather;

The books we shared and read,

And up lifting words we said?

Will you remember times,

I shared words that rhymed;

Or remember  lovely hours

We spent walking through flowers;

How we shared our cherished dreams,

And discussed the way life seems?

When I cross to the other side,

I shall put away my pride,

And tell others what you are,

A  best friend, by far.

Shadows dance near the edges

Of a tearful, troubled mind.

Found on Pinterest on 6-3-16.

They call it Shadow Land:

A place where broken dreams

Die a slow, lonely death.

The heart still beats deliberately,

In a chest that has forgotten

How to breathe deeply and fully.

The mind gradually slows to a crawl.

Awareness shuts down as systems

Switch on automatically.

Eyes stare straight ahead

Without a glimmer of hope.

The need for movement ceases.

Yet still, the heart pumps on in

A  body filled with bleak despair.

Age has taken its toll on lips

That have forgotten how to form

A smile that once lit up a room.

He dozes for a while–oblivious

To all the sounds around him.

He finally stirs, moving

Like some kind of  marionette,

Sitting up and putting his feet

On the floor, one foot at a time.

He leaves his house and starts

His solitary journey down the street.

No one realizes the courage it takes

Found on Pinterest on 5-25-16.

For him to walk one step forward,

To stop and say hello to people

While walking down the street.

There is a kind of determination,

He finds, in trying to survive

One more day without hope.

FREEDOM FROM DEATH

For my beloved Country

Is being dragged through dirt.

The lack of regulations,

Others yelling of their rights,

Has enabled many others

To turn a blind eye

To mass killings in the night.

How can we as a Country

Keep choosing to defer,

Some kind of gun control

So shootings won’t occur?

How many of our people

Have to die senseless deaths,

Because we lack intelligence

And will to save the breaths

Of other human beings

Who deserve to live?

What keeps us from trying

To give what we can give?

Our time and our attention

To set the record straight:

We won’t live with shootings,

And we can’t afford to wait,

For the “do nothing Congress,”

To decide to legislate,

Whether others in our Nation

Deserve to feel secure,

Live their lives with freedom,

And equality that’s pure.

It’s time to lift our voices

As one in this great land,

To call or send petitions

So all can understand.

We’re taking back our Country

So freedom can ring,

Again in America,

With all that freedom brings.

The Power Of Words.

Article by Yu/stan/kema., Pinterest photo quote- Ursula Le Guin., Pinterest photo quote., The power of words, Words can create goodness., Words can create unhappiness and pain.

When I was young, the power of words was astonishing. Words had the power to invoke in the human heart a whole array of feelings. When they came from abusive parents, the words were full of danger, and filled with hurt that got stuck first, in a child’s throat, and moved to the lungs, freezing the chest. They had the power to stop all action such as running, skipping, jumping, and laughing. All breathing stopped, and one hoped for the best. It was amazing to see words slice into the heart, and remove hope from the soul.

On the play ground, unkind words shouted by school bullies filled the heart with a burning shame that seemed  to never end. It was usually about things one couldn’t change or do anything about, like wearing glasses, being cross-eyed,  too short,  too wide, or clumsy. Sometimes it came as a result of wearing dirty clothes because an alcoholic mother seldom washed clothes.

But words also had the magical power to heal: When kids shouted a child’s name with pride when he became good at hitting home runs or making goals on the soccer field. When a teacher smiled and said with kind words, “Some day you will achieve much for our world,” creating a sense of faith that good could come from a child’s  hard work.

Words had the power to heal in the process of undergoing therapy with a compassionate Social Worker.  They had the power to give pride to a parent, when a child first uttered the word, “Mama,” or “Dada,” These three words spoken by a child, ” I love you,” had the power to produce joy in the receiver and the giver.

Words can heal or destroy. They can lift one up with hope or throw one into the depths of despair. They can evoke a feeling of love or overwhelming hate. They can make a person feel worthy or unworthy, produce trust, or create fear.

One thing is for sure, that words should be spoken truthfully, delivered kindly, spoken thoughtfully, and as much as possible, with acceptance toward the recipient.  Words have incredible power and can bring about so much goodness. Each person has to decide for himself how he will use the power of words during a life time.

What To Understand About Depression.

What To Do About Depression From A Client’s Viewpoint.

Depression runs on a continuum. It can run from very little depression to a full-blown, down in the deep hole kind of depression where suicidal thoughts are serious and suicidal acts are often acted upon. Depression can last for years, a month, or it can occur on a regular basis, where it comes and goes. Some depressed people experience only feeling down. Others can experience mood swings. The one thing most people can tell you about depression is, it doesn’t  feel good and sometimes it can be quite painful.

There are many factors that can cause depression. Every person who has depression is different when it comes to etiology. Some forms are caused by situational loss and grief. Others are caused by trauma, such as child abuse, car accidents, death, fighting wars; physical illnesses; accumulated stress over many years that affects the neurotransmitters in the brain; neglect; and inherited tendencies. It is a very complex disease.

Treating it is also complex. What works for one person may not work for another. Medications given at the lowest effective dose can be quite beneficial for some. The medication needs to be prescribed by a Dr. The depressed person and Dr. have to work as a team to find the right medication and the effective dosage. They both have to give each other feedback on side effects, how is it helping or not helping. The client also has to be willing to give the drug a chance and work with the Dr. on following directions for taking the medication. Medication has been quite helpful for me. Depression runs in my family and I have seen positive effects for others as well. I do know for some people, it has not been helpful.

Psychotherapy is also helpful in many ways. Especially the kind in which trauma can be processed after learning skills that can help one regulate, and tolerate emotions, change thoughts, and reevaluate behavior patterns that may not be beneficial in one’s life.  The more tools one has to fight depression, the better. I have found dialectical behavior skills to be quite helpful in my life. The processing of trauma and loss is also quite helpful. Getting enough sleep and nutrition is critical. Lack of self-care can create more depression. It takes energy to fight depression. The difficult part is, depression can take one’s energy away.

Depression makes it hard to want to be around people or get involved in activities that one enjoys. The reality is, it’s important to get out of one’s house, be with people, and do the things one loves. This is not easy to do. Some times it seems impossible.

That’s when family and friends can get involved. Encouraging depressed people, being willing to take the time to help can some times get good results. Having compassion can also help. Realize that each depressed person has to put energy into doing these things. When one has depression, there is often little energy. Doing this, can be quite hard. The depressed person has to be willing to try whatever may help, and have the resources to do so. One has to work to get a good quality of life when depressed. It is never easy and there is no simple remedy. However, to enjoy life some of the time, the depressed person has to try.

That I am one with the universe,

I want to have my pair of wings and

Dive down canyons at the speed of light;

Peel forth laughter that would echo down

All the various corridors of time and  send

Forth vibrations of goodness and love.

Yet,  I must accept the limitations I am given,
