If I had to encapsulate in a small bit of space what our life on earth is all about, the quote above from Henri Nouwen, would do it beautifully for me.

When we are young, our minds are full of things we want  to accomplish. Our energies become directed toward getting  a good job, getting the home we’ve always dreamed of owning,  and finding someone to share our life with. A lot of our precious time is spent texting, on the internet, listening to music, or doing                   what we really enjoy doing. We also spend a great deal of time parenting our children.

When we grow old, we have fewer distractions to occupy our minds. We are given the gift of time. We slow down, find time to smell flowers, watch butterflies, touch trees, and observe more intently the things in our environment. We also spend more time contemplating life, exploring our own inner world, and more time searching and talking to God, or studying religion and philosophy.

We spend time asking ourselves questions and trying to sort out for ourselves what really matters in life, what we can’t do without, and what our purpose is, and have we fulfilled what we were sent to do. We come to the realization that People matter. Reconciling relationships and finding resolution matters. Finding our way back to the God of our childhood so that we can call God Abba, matters.

Life finally lets us know that Love is our purpose on earth. We are here to work for peace, to offer forgiveness to others, as well as ourselves. We are here to care for People without discrimination or judgment. We are here to care for the hungry, the sick, the dying, the poor, the old, the disabled, and always the children. This is what God sent us to do, and we must find the strength and courage to do it, even in difficult times.

If I say, “Move these mountains,

Move these mountains in my way.”

Would Jesus move them for me,

And bring me rest today?

If I said, “Be my Saviour,

Be my Saviour and my King.”

Would Jesus come to save me,

Tuck me beneath His wing?

If I said, “Remove my sins, Lord.

Make me white as falling  snow.”

Would He walk me to the river,

Wash me clean like long ago?

If I said, “Make me humble.

Take away my foolish pride.”

Would He use me as a vessel,

And teach my heart to open wide?

If I said, “I come before You,

Like a child that’s innocent.”

Would He wipe away these tears, love,

And receive me penitent?

For I know I need the Lord,

Need His love and His trust.

“Please come and take me, Jesus,

Before it all turns to dust.”

It amazes me when some Christians come and they are eager to tell you how much love you can receive from God, but they rarely offer their help or encouragement, or comfort. They somehow believe God is all you need and no one else. It seems contradictory, to me, because if that was so, God didn’t need to send His son Jesus to the earth so that people could have contact with God using their senses: touching, seeing, hearing, smelling, etc. God had already figured out that humanity needed more in order

to know the real God. They needed reminders, things to hold on to so they could keep their hope alive. They needed to see Jesus with their eyes, hear His voice as he told stories. They needed the rituals to keep Jesus alive in their hearts. He used the sense of touch with many. He could have healed without touching anyone. Instead, He touched the man who was blind, the leaper, the prostitutes, the sinners, the children, and those who followed Him. He sat and broke bread with people who were shunned by society. He took the time to give people His attention. He was involved with people. He was not distant. He interacted with them. In truth, He loved people and He gave from His heart. When he was about to die, he told His followers to love each other and to take care of those in need of care. He made strong His instructions to His disciples. ” Love one another as I have loved you.. Love your neighbor like you love yourself.” It was meant to be a commitment. God knew people needed to feel accepted and loved by God and the followers He left behind.

This reminds me of a poem I wrote in my twenties. It describes very well what I am attempting to communicate here.

CHRIST LIVES IN YOU.

When I was down, without a friend,

You came and took my hand.

You found the time to help me up

And taught me how to stand.

Up on my feet and take the blows

Which surely came to me.

You touched my soul with loving hands

And helped my eyes to see

That God can be as real today

As He was long ago

When Love came down in human flesh

To help us all to know

How much a Father cared for us

And wanted us to be

Reconciled to Him once more

For all eternity.

     Jesus

Dear baby Jesus

Was born in a stable.

He laid in the sweet-smelling

Hay of a manger.

He could have been born

To wealth and high places,

Worn clothing befitting

A king with great graces.

Instead, from the time

Of His humble birth,

He walked the back roads,

Had a common man’s hearth.

He healed the hurt leper,

Gave food to the poor,

Sat down with the Sinners,

And opened the door

Of His heart to the lonely,

The outcast, the ill.

He was focused on

Doing His Father’s will.

Today I am thankful

For His gift to mankind:

To be in God’s presence,

And not left behind.

LOSS OF A MOTHER

Jesus often wrote about the characteristics of children. He defined them as being open to life. What He meant was they accepted life as it was in the present moment and they were receptive to what stood before them. Instead of looking at the dirt or grime, or ugliness in things, He knew they had this incredible ability to get down to the essential elements and see it for what it actually was. They could discern a lot of the time who was being honest and who was lying. He knew that children could be incredibly kind and loving and that they had this enormous capacity for forgiveness. They wanted  to and needed to believe in goodness because they wanted to live in a beautiful world, a kind, and caring world. Probably because they needed that to exist for their own survival. To live in an ugly world full of cruel, hateful people was something children wanted no part of. They flourish by seeing sunsets, hearing birds sing and  watching them build nests. They become nourished by sunlight, light spring rain, and trampling through leaves of every color of the rainbow in the fall. They need the feel of snow between their fingers and the sound of ice crackling underneath their boots in the winter time. In the spring, in order for their souls to grow, they need to smell and touch flowers, hug trees, pick up acorns and hold them in their tiny hands. They need to inhale the sweet scents of spring and crave the sun’s warmth as well as the light cool breezes of summer days. They must have the love of a pet to give to them unconditional love. They need all these things. Most of all they need a mother’s love.

As a baby, they learn rapidly that they can’t survive alone. They cannot care for themselves because they haven’t the skills to do so. They need the warmth of their mother’s body, hands gently cradling their tiny heads, fingers touching their tiny hands and feet. They need to know they are a priority, that eyes light up when they are in the room, that soft sounds will soothe them when they are afraid, and hands will comfort them when they are sick. They learn to rely on their mothers and this reliance never ends. It is always there underneath the surface and affects us all our lives. Mothers teach children to have faith someone will come and someone will hear when they need help.  Mothers teach children to be fair, to be responsible for their own actions, to learn from them what it means to be human. Good mothers teach children survival skills, support them in their quest for separateness, and their struggle to find their own identities. They give guidance when children establish their own families and often help with child care.

When a woman looses a mother, no matter how old she is, the loss is devastating.  It shakes us to the core and affects us for decades. There is such pain and hurt in such a loss as death. But for those who lose their mother’s to the ravages of old age or betrayal, the loss is inconsolable.

 A Soldier’s Prayer

Speak to me

Sweet, Jesus:

Do you love me

When I’m weak?

When my soul

Is war-torn, weary

And I’m Just

Too tired to seek

Your strong hand

To pull me from

This foxhole I’m in.

Find my heart

Sweet Jesus.

Don’t leave me

Here to die

In this strange, ugly city

Without a reason why.

Speak to me, Lord.

Speak to me.

Cover me with

Your protection.

Send your angels

To guard my way.

Lead me out of

War’s destruction

And hear me

While I pray.

Speak to me, Lord.

Speak to me.

I hear your voice,

Sweet, Jesus.

I hear you

Speak to me.

I feel your touch

While dying.

You’ve come

To set me free.

God’s love is

All around me.

He rocks me

In His arms.

Sweet peace

Invades my spirit

And I am free

From harm.

Thanks to you, Lord.

Thanks to you.
