There’s beauty in the lovely thought

That she will be my friend.

Someone to trust and cherish, too,

On whom I can depend.

A friend who knows right from wrong,

And likes me for myself.

A friend who digs inside  my mind

To cultivate its wealth.

A friend who raises me above

The tears of yesterday

And never fails to let me know

“There’s hope in just today.”

A friend who tells me what she thinks

And seeks to tell the truth.

Who spurs me toward much brighter goals

That lie within my youth.

A friend to love and honor still

No matter if the sky

Be filled with darkness and with clouds

Because I’m doubting why.

A friend who means a great deal more

Than what I can express.

She shows me  deep respect and care,

With heart-felt tenderness.

There’s beauty in the lovely thought

She’ll always be my friend.

Someone to trust and cherish, too,

On whom I can depend.

It never ceases to amaze me that very few people honor the commitments they make to family, friends, agencies, work sites, or customers they serve. We all have our priorities, but those we make commitments to should be on our priority list. To commit means to pledge to take action, to carry through on a promise we’ve made to someone else. We give our word and a person’s word should stand for something, honor. I once heard a woman ask another woman,” Why don’t you trust me after all this time?” The woman replied, ” Why can’t you keep any promise that you make?” The one has a lot to do with achieving the other. For someone to say, “I will support you in this decision. I will help you in the transition and change, and will do whatever is needed,” and then jump ship, is breaking a promise and endangers the trust that still remains. Too often promises are made and when the going gets tough and uncomfortable, we decide to change the rules. We cloak it as being good for the other person, but in reality, deep down inside us, we are doing it so we are not inconvenienced. We are doing it to serve our own needs.

Nothing angers me more than adults breaking promises they make to children. They seem to assume that children will not notice, because of their age, that they don’t matter. Ask any teacher, ask the children and they will tell you that they do notice, and they do get the message that you don’t care.

Sometimes we forget that a higher law supersedes the workplace. That is God’s law if we are  Christians-do no harm. There is always a way to respond and act with God’s love when the situation calls for it. Sometimes we use excuses to hide our inability or our desire to not do what would inconvenience us. We do not fool the people involved. We do not fool God either. It’s all a matter of priorities, a matter of principle, and honoring the religion we own. Commitments are the very fabric of our lives. If we are not honoring them, then we’ve got a lot of soul-searching to do.

       Those Who Care

We seem to appreciate others we barely know for doing  random acts of kindness towards us. Because it is unexpected, it gets our attention and we respond quickly. Yet those who interact with us daily or on an ongoing basis, such as family members or good friends, we   often fail to see the little ways they make our lives easier and we end up taking them for granted. Sometimes we even feel entitled to more than what we have been given. In some part of our mind, we tend to see them as parts of ourselves.

But they are not. They are separate from us and choose to give to us from their hearts. For them, a meal, a clean house, a well-kept yard, a word of comfort, a pat on the back is their way of saying,” I am here for you and I care.” One of the greatest gifts any one can give to another is to stay in our lives, and to make a commitment to enjoy the good times and bravely deal with the bad behavior we often perpetrate on those we take for granted. They work hard to accept the things that can’t be changed, and they make an effort to seriously work out the difficulties that can be resolved with those they care about. They deserve our thanks and our respect because deep down inside, if we remove the denial, we can see  we have our own weaknesses and days of selfishness. In the coming year, we can choose to make life sweeter for those who have given so freely to us from the heart.
