Life is a mixture of both good and bad experiences. How we react to those experiences determines whether we experience happiness or a sense of peace in every year that passes. It is so easy to accept the good because we love things that excite us, attract our attention, inspire us, or comfort us. Babies make most of us feel good unless we are on a long flight over the Atlantic Ocean and a baby on board cannot be consoled and screams for hours. Growing older when we are young, excites us. Growing older when we are old tends to feel more unsettling and for some of us, down right horrifying. It all depends on how we see our experiences and how we choose to respond to them.

Accepting bad experiences tend to be much more difficult. Perhaps because they usually happen unpredictably, or when we need to meet a deadline of some sort, or they involve pain, sorrow, or discomfort. We are creatures of comfort and we like feeling loved, secure, joyful, and satisfied. We seek pleasure in our lives. We do not actively  search for pain, ugliness, loss, or betrayal, but those things seem to find us. We tend to react to bad experiences by complaining, grieving, and blaming God or someone else who is around. We get angry, struggle, use bad ways to cope, or we become overwhelmed with fear and refuse to let go of what we must let go of if we are to move forward in our lives.

The one thing we can do that can be helpful is to learn how to accept what is in this moment in time, to breathe, to slow our thinking, calm our impulses, give ourselves time to rest, and to let life flow. After a time, most problems get resolved without our interference, or we have built up our resources and energy to more effectively deal with the present issues. Sometimes we find that bad experiences can teach us valuable lessons, or deepen our relationships with others and God. Accepting the good with the bad is not easy, but life was never meant to be easy. The choices we make in how we react to the bad things in life can make our lives more tolerable and give us peace.

“The hardest task in the world for me is to have faith. I believe in God and I know He is present. My difficulties lie with believing He deems me worthy of His attention when so many others are going through tough times. I have trouble believing He won’t get distracted by some one else. I am aware that having parents and friends who weren’t reliable has left its mark on me. I grew up knowing that if  I believed someone would come and save me, I was in for a big disappointment. I learned the hard way, that it was up to me if I wanted a better life and a satisfying one. That is a comforting way to live when you are young, strong, resourceful, and quick.

The difficulties of having faith become more obvious when old age approaches. Life becomes unpredictable. Illness strikes when you least expect it. Money becomes less plentiful, and friends and family members move or die. Losses start to multiply. Your strength starts to fail and you forget things. It becomes harder and harder to save yourself. You learn that asking for help is a rational thing to do and some tasks are just too difficult. So you learn to pray, and you ride the tough times out. You find out by experience how to adjust to change, and you discover a new level of spirituality. You also take a journey inside yourself to rediscover who you are and where you fit in God’s great design.”

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS IS LOVE

Found on Facebook Timeline on 1-5-17. Sandra Kring.

Found on Facebook Timeline on 1-5-17. Sandra Kring.

The world is in need of so many things, but what it needs most is love. All around us, we see evidence that this is true. The conflicts in Syria and Iraq, the bombings in Europe, Isis carrying out terrorist attacks in various places around the world, and the divisiveness seen in the US 2016 election. We see it in the language used in discussing politics. Most of all, our lack of love is shown by how we treat people different from us.

We hear the poor called lazy, the disabled made fun of, minorities called ugly names and being classified in terms we would never want to hear being used with us. Being good or decent is seen as being weak. Once we roll around in all this for a time, it starts affecting us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Before long, we begin to pull away, and we yearn for something else.

We yearn for love. We want encouragement, help when our soul is in despair, or our physical needs aren’t being addressed. We want people to care whether we live or die. We want connection with others and we hunger for acts of kindness to revive us when we want to give up.

For love to happen, each one of us needs to become a light blazing in the darkness. We need to reflect love, perform acts of kindness, help others that are less fortunate than us, and have compassion and understanding for those who are different. Our light will cause other lights to shine until the darkness fades away.

Darkness falls in the black curtains of night.

Crickets, and locusts play a melody

Nocturnal creatures move to

in an effortless dance of life

And death under the moon’s light.

Creatures slither and crawl.

They leave  behind them

Little trace of their existence,

Hoping to catch something good

To help them survive it all.

Darkness envelopes the hush of night.

Loved ones gather to embrace each other

In a dance of tenderness and joy.

They seek some reassurance

That every thing will come out right.

To leave behind bits and pieces

Of their authentic selves

And to share with each other

The  fruits of a balance in power.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly people try to make every thing alright when someone is feeling sad, irritated, or some other negative emotion. We want to  make him/her laugh, or we say, ” Don’t be mad,” or “Think positive thoughts.”  What the person really wants to hear is: ” I’m sorry today has been a tough day for you. Go ahead and cry.”

We want our feelings to be validated by others. We want to be able to be human and have others accept us on our good  days and on our bad days. People do not want to be judged                            by others.  They want to be understood. They need acceptance  and compassion. They need someone to hold their hand or give  them a hug.

The next time someone you know is having a hard day, bite  your tongue, validate their feelings, and try to accept them  just where they are. They will love you for it.

OUR LIVES HAVE VALUE.

“The following poem reminds me that each of us has value to someone else ” as a stumbling block or a stepping-stone.” Our influence on other people is so great, yet we stand in denial how, one hour with one person can change the course of a life, forever.

In my life, I have learned lessons from people who hurt me as well as from those who have helped me. Those who gave me comfort, helped shore up my resources, and gave me the strength to continue on. There have been role models, teachers, and friends who have loved me, and who have given me hope in the midst of darkness. I am grateful for them. There have been people who have held me back, but those have been few. I am  aware that what I do has consequences, for others and for myself.”

Leaf in the wind.

I blow back and forth,

As I struggle to begin

To escape the pain

I’ve lived in, within.

I’m shedding the cocoon,

That has confined

Me for a while.

It has kept me inside

By being in denial,

Of the strength

I am hiding,

Because of fear’s smile.

I’m pulling,

And twisting,

Myself out,

Even when filled

With self-doubt.

I am having fun,

Sitting and stretching,

In the hot  sun.

Because, I  am trying,

To lift my wings

And not lose sight,

It takes real courage

To learn to fly,

Wheel, and soar

In a sun-lit sky.

She was four years old, someone said.

Her hair was the color of a raven’s wing.

Her eyes were black as the darkest night.

If you walked right by, you could hear her sing:

“Jesus loves me, this I know,

For my mommy tells me so.

If I am good, she’ll hug me tight,

Read me a book, and turn out the light.”

Mommy and I went down the street.

Mommy walked fast, left me behind.

I tripped and fell on my little seat.

Mommy came back. She wasn’t kind.

l cried and cried, and rubbed my eyes.

She slapped my face and called me bad.

“I’m not going to read to you, tonight.”

I lowered my head and I felt sad.

What did I do that made her yell?

I was trying my best to walk fast.

I don’t know why she hates me so.

It must be something in the past.

She entered the store with me in hand.

She went to the escalator and said.

“Climb two steps, and there you’ll stand.

I’ll come right back for you instead.”

I waited for hours for her to come.

I waited until the day was done.

Policemen came and took me home.

She was in the kitchen having some fun.

She told the police I had been bad,

That I had decided to  disobey.

So she left the store and went back home

She was going to let me have my way.

After they left, she laughed so hard.

I thought she would split herself in half.

I finally got it that awful day.

I was the object of her wrath.

I went to bed feeling lonely and blue.

I spent the night trying to figure out,

How to be successful winning her love,

And how to deal with all my doubt.

When morning came, I bowed my head

I asked God to hear my prayer:

“God bless mommy when she’s mad.

Help me God to be more fair.”

      FEELINGS CHANGE.

Life is filled with Good and Bad.

We are often Happy, Sad.

Sometimes we are up or down,

In the air, and on the ground.

Feelings come and feelings go,

And sometimes take a heavy toll.

When we feel so Tired and Weary,

All we want is to be Cheery.

Sorrow has its own rewards:

We have Happy we look towards.

When we’re feeling so much Mad,

We look forward to Glad.

It is always good to know:

Stick around and you will see,
