beauty, flowers, Poem- The Rhodora., Poetry of Ralph Waldo Emerson., Quotation by Yu/stan/kema., Rhodora

” This poem is very descriptive and beautiful in catching all the ways a flower is special and full of beauty. There is an amount of tenderness in how he gently puts words to the sheer loveliness of its bloom. I can almost see him caressing its petals with a finger. Ralph Waldo Emerson  knew its value as a flower when he wrote: ‘Beauty is its own excuse for being.’

The heart indeed, craves what it needs. The soul needs beauty in order to survive the heartbreaks in life.”    Yu/stan/kema

THE RHODORA

In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes,

I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods,

Spreading the leafless blooms in a damp nook,

To please the desert and the sluggish brook.

The purple petals, fallen in the pool,

Made the black water with their beauty gay;

Here might the redbird come his plumes to cool,

And court the flower that cheapens his array.

Rhodora! if the sages ask thee why

This charm is wasted on the earth and sky,

Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing,

Then Beauty is its own excuse for being:

Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose!

I never thought to ask, I never knew:

But, in my simple ignorance, suppose

The self-same Power that brought me there brought you.

When I was just a girl of eight,

I stretched out flat upon the ground,

And on my back I saw the world

With a blue sky, heard natural sounds.

Found on Pinterest on 7-17-15. Days of grace-cherie.

I felt my soul fly out of me

And land on top a soft white cloud.

I embraced the universe

And heard an angel laugh out loud.

All around me Beauty breathed

And blew sweet hope into my chest.

She wrapped me in serenity,

And gave me a much-needed rest.

The scent of sweet tender leaves

Moved gently through the tall oak trees.

Found on Pinterest on 6-13-16.

The smell of Honeysuckle blooms

Drifted across the morning breeze.

I saw one-hundred flowers dance

And lift their faces to the sun.

They smiled and bowed their heads in prayer

And gave thanks to the Holy One.

In me there grew such ecstasy.

It blew the storms of life aside.

It gave me respite for a day

And brought back hope that had died.

Darkness and light

are both intertwined

among the threads

of my life’s fabric.

Found on Pinterest on 12-17-16. Stephen Hayward. Stars

Love and fear

are found at

the intersection of

commitments I make.

Beauty and truth

are found when I

contemplate my desire

for what is good.

Respect and faith

are a part of

any relationship

where trust endures.

Life and death

are journeys I

must endure

to embrace eternity.

The River bends and curves

Around the neighborhood.

It ripples and swiftly flows

Like a beautiful river should.

A pure white egret stands

On one foot, admiring the view.

It’s graceful long neck

Is like a song sung in cue.

Geese swim in the cold water,

Their wings lift, churning the air.

One glides behind the other.

Their flight is like a prayer.

New life appears on the trees

That grow close to the shore.

Tender leaves dance and sway

Down by the river’s roar.

Beauty lies all around me,

As the world falls apart.

Storms are on the horizon,

But hope remains in my heart.

While living in

A troubled world.

Things are not

As they seem.

In my mind,

I try to reconcile

What is duty,

With what has

Unfurled.

Is it a

Bad dream?

Have I forgot

What really is

Worth while?

Bogged down

By a world of sin,

I suddenly see

That real peace

Begins with me.

                1960

A child went forth every day

To see the bluest skies.

The air she breathed was very clean.

Delight was in her eyes.

The trees grew tall within the woods

As birds flew all around.

She laughed and sang and danced a jig.

She knelt upon the ground.

She gave great thanks to He who gave

Such beauty for her soul.

For she and Mother Nature knew,

They all could make her whole.

                 2025

A child went looking for a sky

That was a lovely blue.

She wore a mask upon her face,

But toxins came right through.

She looked in vain for greener trees,

And sat upon the hill.

She saw the devastation from,

What oil and gas could kill.

She wanted water that was clear,

To satisfy her thirst.

But all the water she could find,

By mankind had been cursed.

“The first time I heard the following poem was at Camp Trail Blazer in New Jersey. Lois Goodrich, the director of the camp, was sitting in a rocking chair in front of a huge stone fireplace with leaping flames curling around a stack of wood. At her feet sat a huge crowd of children. Their faces glowed in the firelight and their eyes snapped with attention and love for the woman who was reading to them. I will never forget the sheer look of joy on their faces. The room was silent except for the low lyrical voice of the woman who was bringing the poem to life. I was riveted to the voice that danced and sang poetry.”

BARTER

Life has loveliness to sell,

All beautiful and splendid things.

Blue waves whitened on a cliff,

Soaring fire that sways and sings,

Found on Pinterest on 10-30-15.

And children’s faces looking up

Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,

Music like a curve of gold.

Scent of pine trees in the rain,

Eyes that love you, arms that hold,

And for your spirit’s still delight,

Found on Pinterest on 10-30-15.

Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,

 Buy it and never count the cost;

For one white singing hour of peace

Count many a year of strife well lost,

And for a breath of ecstasy

Give all you have been, or could be.

The world is full of beauty

Sparkling seas,

A garden in full bloom,

The shape of trees,

A child’s eyes dancing

With some new delight,

A sky ablaze with stars

All twinkling bright,

A sun-splashed meadow’s gold,

The rainbow’s end…

But more than these,  the love

Of friend for friend.

When The Heart, Mind, and Soul Are In Conflict.

It is never easy making important decisions that will affect one’s life. The heart is the place where love dwells. It can have an extremely powerful influence on the decisions we make in the future. Love is a positive emotion and throughout history we have told ourselves that love can conquer all things, and can overcome any obstacles. Our experiences  teach us the power of love can do many things, but sometimes circumstances exist that are beyond what we can overcome. The mind is the seat of wisdom and truth. Most of us love truth and we would rather hear the reality of what actually is instead of believing a lie. The problem is, love feels good. It can lift us up. It can convince us that we are powerful.  Sometimes love blinds us to the truth.

That is why God made the soul and made it more powerful. It trump’s the heart and the mind.. It is the seat of our value system and houses the ethics and morals we hold dear. The heart and the mind communicate with the soul, but ultimately, the soul needs to have the final say. The soul is what keeps us on the right path. The soul drives us to be the best we can possibly be, and the soul cherishes beauty, wisdom, truth, and love. The soul connects us to God. When we make a good decision, our soul experiences a knowing. Love will try to influence the decision-making process. The mind also tries to convince the soul by using logic and reason. We have to allow our soul to guide us. When we do not, things often do not go as planned.

BEAUTY LIGHTS UP THE HEART AND INSPIRES THE SOUL

BEAUTY LIGHTS UP THE HEART

” I am going to my own hearth-stone, Bosomed in yon green hills alone…Where vulgar feet have never trod, A spot that is sacred to thought and God…..And when I am stretched beneath the pines, Where the evening star so holy shines, I laugh at the lore and the pride of man, At the sophist schools and the learned clan; For what are they all, in their high conceit, When man in the bush with God may meet. ”                     GOODBYE-   Ralph Waldo Emerson

BEAUTY INSPIRES THE SOUL

The greatest source of comfort and caring that I received as a little girl came from nature. She was both my mother and my friend for I came from a household where the adults were gone most of the time. I learned how to be self-reliant at the age of two.

If I needed warmth, I would go outside on the coldest of days in order to let the sun’s rays heat my body.  My house was cold and dark much of the time. Whenever I needed beauty to sustain me in the darkest moments of my soul, I would sit on the front porch after sundown, and I would gaze for hours at the stars that lit the night. I knew one day one of them would be named after me. He Who was Most Holy and All Loving would do that for me. I never doubted for a moment that He would come through for me. The moon’s glow would magically make beautiful all that fell in its path, even a child like myself. When I needed the touch of soft hands, I would seek the wind during the day. When I was sick, I would lay next to the open window at night in order for the wind to cool my hot cheeks.

I would run up and down the streets as a child searching for trees to hug, grass to tickle my feet, flowers to smell, and insects to study. I would lay in the grass and look up into the endless blue sky and watch clouds shape and chase each other like children playing tag. I would listen to birds by the hour and chase butterflies. This was the only beauty in my life, my only source of joy. There was freedom in the outdoors, and there was life rich for the taking, a well of endless knowledge to drink from. There was strength here as well as compassion. It was in this chapel of trees and flowers that I found evidence of a loving God and I came to know that He did love me.

When I was young and there were no human arms to comfort me, no tender words said to let me know that I was loved, it would have been easy to allow myself to become as cold as ice and as unfeeling as a block of stone. But I was a child and music caused my feet to dance. Beauty moved my heart to soar as eagles do when they fly over majestic mountains. Life flowed within my body. I chose to feel freedom and found a passion in the great outdoors when I danced amid spring flowers and held leaves and acorns in my tiny hands, holding tightly to that which would come to save me  in the end.
