There once lived a mouse

Who looked like a rat,

Had a sunny disposition,

And he wore a jaunty hat.

He would leave his house,

Found on Pinterest on 4-6-19. S. Smith saved to Wee Sweet Creatures.

In the middle of the night,

Looking for some cheese

That smelled just right.

He wanted to impress

The mouse he adored,

So he looked for food

He thought he could afford.

He wanted her to see

He was worth much more

Than the lazy gray mice

Who lived next door.

He looked in the Deli

And a French Café.

He smelled a great aroma

That was blowing his way.

He bought a chunk of cheese

And he put it in his pants.

He knocked on her door,

And he asked her to dance.

They danced in the street

And  they bent and swayed.

He asked her to wed him,

And he was not afraid.

She told him she loved him

And said she’d be his wife.

They married the next day

And lived a happy life.

A little gray bug crawled on the ground.

He complained about his lot in life.

He said he was tired of being so small,

And said he’d never find a wife.

“All of the other bugs by far,”

He said, “Have things I don’t possess.”

I have no special curb appeal.

I know I’m just an awful mess.”

“I’m often smashed by other things,

Because I’m small and hard to see.

My color is a dirty gray.

It’s hard for me to climb a tree.”

“Such lovely colors others have,

But I am ugly as can be.

My wings won’t take me very far.

I’m not happy being me.”

God watched and listened from afar,

Became fed up with his complaints.

God put a brush in His hand,

And He began to quickly paint.

God made the bug a brilliant red

And gave to him a wondrous shine.

Soon all the birds were flying down,

Intent to grab the bug and dine.

“Please make me big,” He cried to God,

“So they can’t carry me away.”

“They’ll find it’s just too hard to fly.

They’ll leave me here to stay.”

God made him the size of a little ball,

And then some children came,

Picked up the bug and threw him high.

He never was the same.

“I’m sorry God that I complained.

I’m better off being who I was.

I’m safer  being small and gray.

I need to accept what God does.”

The gray bug learned a lesson that day,

He wouldn’t soon forget:

“Be content with yourself,

Or live with huge regret.”

To see what she could see.

The tadpoles were swimming,

And she met a bumblebee.

He had lit upon a flower

The color of the sun.

If he didn’t have black stripes,

She would have missed all the fun.

So many flowers to pick from,

Why did he want to nose,

Around a yellow flower,

Why not a beautiful rose?

He had visited all the flowers.

He had tasted each one deeply,

And ate nectar for an hour.

All of the flowers were lovely,

But he liked the yellow ones best,

Because they were yellow like him,

He said with a little jest.

His eyes grew more thoughtful.

Seriously, He said to the girl:

” The flowers remind  me of God’s light,

More precious than the finest pearl.”

ONLY MY OPINION

Is a caterpillar ticklish?

Well, it’s always my belief

That he giggles, as he wiggles

THE SPRING.

A little mountain spring I found

That fell into a pool;

I made my hands into a cup,

And caught the sparkling water up.

It tasted fresh and cool.

A solemn little frog I spied

He looked so boldly in my face,

I’m certain that he thought the place

Belonged by rights to him.

“No one knows,” said the hawk to the rabbit,

“where this river flows.

Just take a deep drink and wiggle your nose

And sharing becomes a habit.

I can tell you’re  scared, I’ll swallow you whole.

But take a risk today.

I’ve really changed my old way of acting.

Let’s take some time to play.”

The rabbit’s heart was beating so fast,

He thought he would die of fright.

He tried, and tried with all of his might

To forget the hawk of the past.

His mothers words came in to his mind,

“Be careful my precious one.

Old habits are hard to break, my son.

Just be friends and stay with your kind.”

“Oh, what a dilemma,” The rabbit said.

“I’d rather make a new friend.

Someone on whom I can depend

But will I end up dead?.”

“It’s risky I know to take a chance

And trust what is to come.

Others may think you’re really dumb,

But I can see in a  glance

You want to experience all of life.

And sit by friendship’s fire.

There’s nothing wrong with a desire

To live your days without strife,” said hawk.

So they drank together and talked a while..

They traveled to the river’s end.

They never regretted being a friend.

They were risk-takers with a smile.

Reflections On Persistence:

college, persistence, Triumph

While I was growing up, I lived a very sheltered life. I had lived in four different agencies that cared for children by the time I was eighteen. My social skills were limited and I had never traveled anywhere until I entered college.

In college, I was fortunate in finding  work while I attended school. I learned how to spend money on root beer floats and hamburgers. I didn’t have a car and most students who lived in the dorms  stayed on campus for lack of transportation. We became a close-knit community out in the middle of no where, far from the rest of civilization.

As a freshman, our stately institution created an initiation for the first year students. It was called “Fish Week.” I had to wear a dorky looking cardboard hat on my head that stayed in place with an elastic string that rested under the chin. Trust me, it was dorky. I also was given a green construction paper fish to wear around my neck. My main task was to see to the needs of the upperclassmen. I had to carry their books and run errands for them. They also required me at times to drop to my knees and sing songs, quote scripture, and recite praises for their mighty achievements. After a week of embarrassment, I felt the seeds of rebellion grow inside my normally tranquil heart. I brought together a group of freshmen students who wanted to restore their tattered sense of dignity.

While some of the upperclassmen were in classes, my trusty comrades and I hid their mattresses in hard to find places. We stashed dissected worms from our biology lab classes in their text books. We covered their dorm rooms with toilet paper. After a time, they discovered who was making their lives difficult.

One night, I foolishly decided to take a shower. The dorm shower was empty when I went in. I took off my clothes and hung them on a hook, right outside the shower curtain. I had a great shower. When I finished, I reached out to grab my clothes to put them on. My hand hit empty air. I shoved back the curtain and sure enough, the clothes were gone. I could feel the panic grow inside my body when I heard the first sound of a snicker.  I felt rooted to the shower floor. Then I heard a mighty roar of laughter.

I knew it was a long walk back to my dorm room, and I was a very private person about my body. My eyes zeroed on to the shower curtain. I removed it from its hooks and wrapped it around my body like a Greek goddess. Holding my head high, I threw a corner of my toga over my shoulder, and walked down the long hallway to my room. The hall filled with upper-class women. There was not a sound as I made my way down the hall to my room. As I opened my door,  there was a roar of applause. The rest of the year had its own reward. The upper-class women invited me into their meetings, and invited me to visit their dorm rooms as well. I made a lot of friends my freshman year by being persistent and by hanging in there. Most of all, I retained my sense of dignity.
