Winter comes on frozen feet

And leaves ice crystals

Hanging in the frigid air.

It sucks the green from the earth

And leaves behind

A blanket of frost and snow.

Animals leave tracks in the fields

Which make them vulnerable

To dangerous predators.

Ice breaks apart on a frozen lake

And one can hear the sound of

Gunshots echoing in the night.

Snow falls from a gray sky

And covers everything

In a sea of white,

That sparkles when

The sun comes out to play.

Such beauty causes a heart

To stop and admire

The purity of the snow

And the peacefulness of Nature.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR: “The Little Star.”

          THE LITTLE STAR

Long ago a little star was born,

And for the longest time, he felt forlorn.

He saw that the other stars could shine.

He wanted so to be as fine.

But he was small and thought,

What he had to give was not,

As wondrous as his brothers.

He was jealous of the others.

Until one night there came,

Angels who said his name,

And beckoned him to follow them,

The splendid Seraphim.

They took him to a stable

And asked if he was able,

To twinkle in the sky,

And cast a light from on high

Into the eyes of a baby boy,

And bring forth a laugh of joy.

They said He was the new-born King,

And salvation He would bring

To a world who needed Him

As moral insight grew dim

In the hearts of everyone

Who lived beneath the earth’s sun.

So the little star shined bright,

As he rose in the night,

And he opened his heart wide,

And gave his all with so much pride.

He caused the baby boy to laugh,

And he created a bright path,

So three kings could find a way,

To pay homage to Christ that day.

Miracles Occur More Often Than You Know.

Miracles occur., poetry by Yu/stan/kema, spirituality, We don't always recognize them.

A miracle happened today

When someone went out of his way,

To sit with me for a while,

And got me to talk with a smile.

A miracle happened last night

After a terrible fight.

I was able to clearly see,

Only I could set myself free.

A miracle happened this year,

After losing all I held dear.

I was able to find

I could know peace of mind.

A miracle happened last week,

When everything seemed bleak.

I was spared from near death,

With a touch of God’s breath.

Miracles come and they go.

They can come in the mist of snow.

They happen more often than you think.

Sometimes faster than a wink.

Learn what God can teach you., Making It Through The Day., poetry by Yu/stan/kema, Some people will help., Some people will hurt you, Your Faith in God will sustain you.

” Come, sit down beside me

By the clear sparkling sea.

Watch me hold the living water

That will soon set you free.

Your journey is starting.

There is so much to learn.

I am here to teach you

Just how to discern:

The light from the darkness,

The truth from a lie,

Those who would harm you,

Or leave you to die.”

There are those who will mock you,

Make fun of your name,

Try to turn you toward pleasure,

And make you feel shame.

They will tell you their secrets,

And how to get rich.

They will take you and use you,

And toss you in a ditch.

They will promise you much,

And take your good heart,

Leave you with nothing,

And rip you apart.

Don’t doubt for a minute,

There are some who are good.

They’ll reach out a hand and

Make themselves understood.

They will treat you with kindness

And show you respect;

Accept all your faults,

And try to protect:

God’s love inside you,

Your desire for what’s right;

Your faith like a child’s,

And your soul full of light.

” Remember there is goodness,

In some that you’ll meet.

You will taste of sweet triumph

And suffer defeat.

But your Faith will uphold you.

I’ll show you the way.

With God’s hand in yours,

You will make it today.”

What Do The Elderly Want, ( Part 2 ).

Article by Yu/stan/kema., Part 2., They don't want to die alone., They want to have some choice in how they die., To be given affection and admiration., To live with dignity., To not be a burden to others., What The Elderly Want.

The elderly want to keep their dignity and not be seen as a burden to society. That is why they want their independence for as long as they can have it. They like being able to call the shots when their minds are capable of doing it. When they are physically or intellectually unable to care for themselves, then it is understood that other arrangements need to be made. If they can stay in their own home and have professionals come in to clean house, or help them do bills or taxes, they would prefer that. Most older people feel safe where they are at. They feel familiar at home and with their own things. They feel they belong there. But if the time comes when their mind no longer recognizes others, and they no longer can control their faculties,  or go to the bathroom by themselves, it is time for a care home. If they become a danger to themselves or others, they would want to be placed where they are not a burden to their loved ones. (Being in a care home is the last thing I would want, but if I was unable to care for myself or was a danger to others, I would want that to happen.)

What amazes me is, we have not put in place a program where an amount would be taken out of each pay check to go toward nursing home care. Most of us, when we are young, believe we will never live that long and so don’t prepare for it. When you are 67, it costs too much to buy insurance for nursing homes. We’ve done this with income for retirement and with Medicare, but they will not cover the cost of Nursing Homes.

The programs we have now to help the elderly are under attack. The only other alternative is that they stay with family members or live in the streets. Medicaid helps with some of the elderly now in certain circumstances, but that is also under attack by members of Congress at the present time. Some of the elderly are fortunate to have the resources to pay for their care in a nursing home.

The elderly want to be showed affection and admiration. They want others to admire the accomplishments they’ve done, the character they have developed, and the skills they still possess. They want to hear their name spoken aloud, want others to cherish them for who they are as people. They want to have their hands held, a light touch on the shoulder, or head. Sometimes a hug would be great. Too much of the time, illness and injury keep them at home and they are soon forgotten by others. Many of the old have not been touched in years, and many have not heard others say their names for long periods of time. Churches could do much to change that if they would rise to the challenge.

Last but not least, the elderly don’t want to die alone and they want some choice about how they die. They want to say good-bye to those who matter. They want closure, and reassurance from others that they will not be forgotten. They need  feedback, a touch from others, and words from people, even when they seem unconscious. They also want to die with as little pain as possible. We need to let them have a choice in the matter.

So few needs the elderly have. The question is, what gets in the way of us being able to do it? If we look inside ourselves, we may not like the answer.

What Do The Elderly Want, ( Part 1).

Article by Yu/stan/kema., How a lot of the elderly live., Medicare., Part 1., Social Security, To live independently., What The Elderly Want.

The elderly is a group of people who are growing in numbers. They have lived through the ups and downs of the last five and a half decades or more. They saw what the Great Depression did and they were scarred by its consequences in more ways than we can possibly imagine. Programs were not in place in that segment of history to support them in times of heart-rendering  adversity. People went hungry and some people died. Others felt like they had lost their dignity, and some felt they had almost lost their souls. Social Security was later created as a safety net to help them get through adversity, and Medicare was created to give them a way to get the medical care they needed and could afford in their old age. Medical problems needed to be addressed early on, and the cost of medical care without good insurance, was financially a heavy burden for them to carry.  So the new programs were developed to help the old in many necessary ways. What people needed and wanted back then are the same things people need and want now.

They want to be able to live independently on their own as much as possible. If they are able to work and want to, they need an avenue to do so part-time and be treated without discrimination in the workforce. They have valuable skills to pass on and they enjoy mentoring others. They need steady income to help them be able to work part-time. Social Security helps with that. Over the years, they have had money taken out of their pay checks to go into the fund to help support them. When they are ill, or disabled, they want income in order to be able to live with dignity. They get this from Social Security. The old need some way of adjusting the amount with a cost of living increase that is based more on food, utility bills, rent and property taxes, insurance premiums, transportation costs, etc. They cannot afford to have their income cut, for what ever reason. They have a difficult enough time making ends meet as it is. There  needs to be a rule that if the old don’t get much of a COLA increase, than the members of Congress should not get much of a raise either.

I know a lot of people over 66 who live frugally off Social Security. They have no other money. Out of that amount comes Medicare B premiums every month, Supplemental Insurance premiums, Dental insurance premiums, Medicare D (drugs) premiums, and deductibles; rent or property taxes; house and car insurance premiums; food costs; gasoline costs; water, sewer, natural gas, electricity, and trash bills every month; car repairs; medication co-pays; and other bills. It helps to get their car and house paid off before retirement, or these costs also come out of Social Security.

For example: I know a woman, living alone, that received 900 dollars a month in Social Security after her husband died. Out of that amount came: $350 for rent; $60 for gas; $60 for electricity; $35 for water and sewer; $70 for trash for three months; money for bus rides; money to pay for yearly dog shots, licence, and dog food; food at the grocery store; and Co-pays of what Medicare does not cover. Medicare does not pay for Dental, most Hearing costs, or most glasses. This woman also pays for a telephone. Her biggest form of entertainment is watching T.V. and going to the grocery store. She needs $1200 dollars to get her teeth fixed. She has teeth pain as she waits to try to save money by cutting back on food. She gets help from the Government to enable her to pay for Medicare premiums based on her income. In the next post, Part Two of What Do The Elderly Want, I will list the other things that they want.

Would Jesus come to save me,

Tuck me beneath His wing?

If I said, “Remove my sins, Lord.

Make me white as falling  snow.”

Would He walk me to the river,

Wash me clean like long ago?

If I said, “Make me humble.

Take away my foolish pride.”

Would He use me as a vessel,

And teach my heart to open wide?

If I said, “I come before You,

Like a child that’s innocent.”

Would He wipe away these tears, love,

And receive me penitent?

For I know I need the Lord,

Need His love and His trust.

“Please come and take me, Jesus,

Before it all turns to dust.”

Reflections on Hunger

06 Tuesday Dec 2016

This post I wrote two years ago, is very appropriate in the times we are now living. There are plans being wrought to take away resources for the poor. We have an obligation as a human being to help others in need of help and a mandate by Christ to do so. We all need people in our lives who show the compassion of Christ.

REFLECTIONS OF A MINDFUL HEART AND SOUL

I find it amazing that in our advanced civilization there exits a segment of society today in the United States who thinks the poor should feed themselves and that the government should not take on the responsibility that every parent has to feed their children. I suppose they feel if enough shame is directed toward these parents, they will be motivated to step up to the plate and feed them. Perhaps they feel, if people go without food long enough, hunger pains will inspire them to work two jobs to feed their children. There are also those who do not want to help the poor for any reason, just because they don’t want to. Some say, “By God, I had to pull myself up by my boot straps and if I can do it, any one can.” I’ve often heard the phrase: “No one helped me. Why should I help…

A Parable For Those Who Wish To See.

A parable, Characteristics of Greed., poetry by Yu/stan/kema, Those who wish to see., While we wait.

Down in the primordial swamp,

All kinds of things slithered and

Crawled in search of any thing

That could be stolen, and carried

With them, to enable them

To survive the trip to the city.

They left by the side of the road,

Those that needed care,

Or a ray of human kindness.

Their moral compass was gone,

As well as any thought of

What was good for everyone.

They wanted only what could

Benefit them in the long run.

Many died, as they became weak,

And were left behind in the dust.

Others scrambled to find

The quickest path to power,

Arrogance, and human greed.

They trampled those that got

In the way of their selfish goals.

They learned how to create a

Smoke screen to distract from

Their real intentions, while they

Took advantage of the innocent,

The angry, and the disengaged.

They lied, manipulated, threatened,

And distorted others to build their power.

Not content with their status and greed,

They wanted more than they could carry.

So they manipulated people and events,

To get the things they wanted.

And so we wait with bated breath,

While all hangs in the balance.

What is a lie and what is truth?

What is said and What is done?

Who is given to and who is not?

Is it all smoke and mirrors?
