When the storm is over,

It’s so good to find

A bridge can be built

Back to humankind.

When feelings get big

And reason is lost,

Some people stay,

Whatever the cost.

It is true in life,

Perfect storms occur

Which create havoc,

And boundaries to blur.

No one is to blame when

Stress becomes great,

Making it impossible,

For people to relate.

What really is important,

Is for both to realize:

Any thing is possible,

When everybody tries.

Anger And Shame Can Harm The Soul, poetry by Yu/stan/kema, Psychology.

Sorrow entwined with anger

To create a type of rage.

Despite what I’ve  learned,

I cannot turn the page,

Or put it in its cage.

Perhaps because I know,

Its turned into a flame

That engulfs past shame.

I  know ” to rely,”

Is critical to growth,

Yet when I really try,

And open up my soul,

I’m told I want too much.

They can’t meet this need,

That I’m an open wound,

Part of my mother’s seed.

 I’m told I want a crutch,

That my effort to rely,

Is just a form of greed.

Impatiently, they sigh.

My self curls up,

And I begin to cry

From trying hard to give,

From learning how to trust.

I feel my self die

In many different ways.

I know that I live

With only half a heart.

Having a balance

Is a learned art.

Allowing time’s a must.

When I’m told, ” I fail,”

It’s not done with malice,

“It’s for my own good.”

It comes across as callous.

It’s a ” this and ” situation

That tears me apart.

I’m filled with frustration.

I’m doomed at the start.

It’s an awful sensation.

Emotions are  feeling states

That seek expression, are innate.

They can be intense or quite mild

We can feel them like an adult, child.

We often build fences around them,

Let them out in a light that is dim.

They can be like a wave moving in and out.

They can be expressed with a terrible shout.

Emotions can move us to tears,

Or age us beyond our physical years.

They can make us do terrible acts,

Or avoid dealing with difficult facts.

Emotions can touch our very soul,

Or make us feel we are not whole.

Feelings can stop us from loving a brother.

Or bring forth cruelty in one another.

Fear can stop us from taking a chance,

Or put us in some sort of trance.

Hate can remove our ability to reason,

Or keep us from seeing friends for a season.

Sadness can suck joy from our lives,

Or bring forth such terrible cries.

If we didn’t have feelings, we’d be a  bore.

We’d  feel something missing from our core.

Preface To: Song Of Myself.

I have learned much over the years about resiliency, and the ability of the human heart to overcome extreme trauma and develop successful coping skills. I have read much in the area of psychology, but some of the most valuable lessons I have learned have come from personal experiences with others and myself. I have come to realize that no matter how strong a person might be, how good his/her coping skills are, everyone has a breaking point.

At any moment in time, circumstances can occur that change and rearrange all we think is true, or what we believe in, how we perceive the world, and see ourselves as human beings. They can also affect how we feel about God and our relationship to him.

I have learned that age and the amount of resources one has affects favorable outcomes in this journey called life. Each person is unique in the way he/she reacts and responds in the face of overwhelming stress.  It is important for me to always remember that when someone reaches the limits of his/her endurance that age, physical health, faith in a higher power, coping skills, resources, and other people make a difference in whether one survives or gives up. Without hope, survival is hard to achieve. Learning to accept what life brings that can’t be changed is so important, yet it is one of my greatest challenges that I deal with in life. I have always believed I could do anything, be anything, or achieve the impossible if only I tried hard enough. It is humbling when that isn’t possible. Learning to have compassion for myself is one thing I’ll be working on for the rest of my life.

In the last four months, I have learned how to: comfort myself and be patient when I am unable to do what was once so easy; set limits with myself and others; accept all the feelings and thoughts I find within myself; and realize my feelings and thoughts come and go with time. My biggest challenge has been in asking for what I need and feeling ok with doing so. I have learned new coping skills as well. This has been a difficult undertaking because of the high expectations I have for myself.

Song of Myself  is a story of what happened to me in the last several years. I hope by sharing this story with others, I can give something useful to those who are trying to survive in order to one day, live again, with joy.

Down in the bayou, he paddled the waters.

Old, hoary moss hung down from the trees.

He poled his canoe through the murky channel,

And enjoyed the cool of the light summer breeze.

He knew he should read the book at his feet,

But nature called to him. He dearly loved her.

He stopped his canoe, took it in with his senses.

Being more mindful, he felt his heart stir.

The sweet birds sang to him all through the day.

He threw out his fish line and heard it sing.

He closed his eyes while the water rocked him.

He savored the feelings that peace could bring.

Alone with the trees, the birds, and the flowers.

The water was lapping against his canoe.

He felt so much peace without people.

This was the thing, he most loved to do.

Hey, little girl with the frozen face

And eyes locked in deep sorrow.

Time to let go, even when it hurts.

You need to leave by tomorrow.

Pick up your clothes, and grab your shoes.

It doesn’t help you to linger.

There is nothing on earth you can do

That would actually help to bring her.

In life you’ll find there are things you lose,

And bad things will happen to you.

It doesn’t matter how hard you try,

Or how much love you’ve got.

Fear in people is a terrible thing.

Love cannot be bought.

Pack up your bags and close the door,

And remember this lesson taught:

It doesn’t matter how much you give

 Even with your trembling heart.

It’s not what you share within that counts.

It’s all the things you are not.

So find a safe place and hide inside.

Forget about sharing and live.

Remember always in your soul.

You are more than wounded pride.

Pain cuts like a knife across her heart.

It’s a never-ending, twisting thing

That makes the mind split a part.

It erases songs she yearns to sing.

Pain pulls her shoulders and her head down.

It comes from behind to knock her out.

It replaces her smile with a terrible frown.

It destroys her faith and creates huge doubt;

Pain brings out the negative, spits out the good.

It moves from the stomach and into the brain.

It replaces ” I  can” with the shaming of ” should.”

It make’s her feel she is going insane.

It makes her unsure of how to feel.

It’s a horrible thing to deal with her self.

She put’s forth an image that’s not even real.

It’s hard to relate, and it hurt’s her health.

Pain is hard to get over and to keep going on,

When the body refuses to move.

Pain often steals hope  from the soul,

And removes the power to soothe.

Blackness comes slowly with the night.

They have sharp teeth that bite,

Burning cigarettes that leave a mark,

And rough hands that tear the skin.

Ugly words can wound  the heart.

Betrayal destroys, “what might have been.”

Still men deny, that evil can  exist:

That killing isn’t part of man’s desire,

Angry words are only said in jest.

No man beats a woman with his fist.

When he cheats, it is  always for the best.

Every man deserves to have a gun.

He fails to see the damage it can do

Yet,  the violence has been done.

I know Light can exist in darkness.

It gives men the courage to walk

The path of least resistance

Filled with love and service..

It is with God’s  assistance

That men can come together

To meet each others needs

And respect their creeds.

A SONG FOR MOTHER.

The boy entered

His Mother’s bedroom,

To watch her fall asleep.

It was for the very last time.

He softly started to weep.

Her face was a pale-yellow.

Her eyes were filled with pain.

He remembered

Her full of laughter.

She would dance

With him in the rain.

She would talk to him

So sweetly,

In the old, red rocking chair.

She’d hold him close to her,

And leave a kiss in his hair.

She’d sing to him

In the moonlight;

Pointed with him,

At the stars;

She’d label the sounds

Of the night; and

Catch lightning bugs

In a  jar.

She taught him

How to love music,

How to play

An old violin.

They both would

Travel towards heaven

On the notes

They held within.

He could see now

She was weakening.

She pointed

At the closet door.

He ran to get

The instrument,

That she was

Looking for.

He cradled the violin,

And felt his fingers fly,

As he played with all his soul,

Brahm’s Lullaby.

Her face was filled with joy

As her soul started to rise.

She was proud of his music

As she entered paradise.

When he put away the score,

He thought he heard her say:

“When you hold your violin,

I’ll be with you, as you play.”

        LIFE LESSON.

There! little girl; don’t cry!

They have broken your doll, I know;

And your tea-set blue,

And your play-house, too,

Are things of the long ago;

But childish troubles will soon pass by.

There! little girl; don’t cry!

There! little girl; don’t cry!

They have broken your slate, I know;

And the glad, wild-ways

Of your school-girl days

Are things of the long ago;

But life and love will soon come by.

There! little girl; don’t cry!

There! little girl; don’t cry!

They have broken your heart, I know;
