Darkness has returned with a vengeance
And like a black hole, it sucks every thing
Good, sweet, and beautiful in its center.
Even songs that happy children sing.
Darkness sits and waits for a moment,
Eager to destroy those who love,
Happy to rob the weary of all hope.
It laughs at those innocent as doves.
It squeezes life out of dusty bones
And those too old to be of any use;
Locks away those who know despair
And gives them such a lame excuse
For denying them the right to breathe.
In our haste, we say a little prayer
And tell them God is all you need.
We convince ourselves we care.
