GONE

About the little chambers of my heart

Friends have been coming-going- many a year.

The doors stand open there.

Some, lightly stepping, enter; some depart.

Freely they come and freely go, at will.

The walls give back their laughter, all day long.

They fill the house with song.

One door alone is shut, one chamber still.

TWO AT A FIRESIDE.

I built a chimney for a comrade old.

I did the service not for hope of hire,

And then I traveled on in winter’s cold,

Yet all the way I glowed before the fire.

BE NOBLE.

Be noble! and the nobleness that lies

In other men, sleeping, but never dead,

Will rise in majesty to meet thine own;

Then will pure light around thy path be shed,

And thou wilt nevermore be sad and lone.

DESERTS.

A desert does not have to be

A sandy waste where springs are dry;

A life can shrink to barrenness

If love goes by.

A desert does not have to be

A place where buzzards wheel at dawn;

A heart can hold as dreadful things

When faith is gone.

             THE TEACHERS

I went to school with the tutor, Law,

A master severe and grim,

Who taught by the pain of the biting cane,

Yet learned I little of him.

I go to school with the teacher, Love,

And my lightened eyes can see

What the pain and the tears of the driven years

Could never reveal to me.

Betrayal kills the soul

When we play a role

Convincing others we’re okay,

As others have their way.

We pretend that we are strong

Even when they are wrong.

We give all that we need

Until internally we bleed.

We convince ourselves that we

Don’t deserve to even be.

What we fail to comprehend

Is they are not our trusted friends,

When all is said and done?

How do you believe in faith

When you’re the only one,

Life seems to pass right by

With the setting of the sun?

Broken hearts, they hurt like hell

And rarely disappear

Before you feel a world of pain

And lose what you hold dear.

Broken hearts are slow to mend.

The past hard to forget.

The longing that you feel inside

Will leave your eyelids wet.

Dear God, in heaven, set apart

A special place for those

Broken hearts that need to heal

Where sorrow often grows.

Let God take you, by the hand,

And mend what once was torn

In so many pieces on

The day that you were born.

“The first time I heard the following poem was at Camp Trail Blazer in New Jersey. Lois Goodrich, the director of the camp, was sitting in a rocking chair in front of a huge stone fireplace with leaping flames curling around a stack of wood. At her feet sat a huge crowd of children. Their faces glowed in the firelight and their eyes snapped with attention and love for the woman who was reading to them. I will never forget the sheer look of joy on their faces. The room was silent except for the low lyrical voice of the woman who was bringing the poem to life. I was riveted to the voice that danced and sang poetry.”

BARTER

Life has loveliness to sell,

All beautiful and splendid things.

Blue waves whitened on a cliff,

Soaring fire that sways and sings,

Found on Pinterest on 10-30-15.

And children’s faces looking up

Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,

Music like a curve of gold.

Scent of pine trees in the rain,

Eyes that love you, arms that hold,

And for your spirit’s still delight,

Found on Pinterest on 10-30-15.

Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,

 Buy it and never count the cost;

For one white singing hour of peace

Count many a year of strife well lost,

And for a breath of ecstasy

Give all you have been, or could be.

VICTORY IN DEFEAT

Defeat may serve as well as victory

To shake the soul and let the glory out.

When the great oak is straining in the wind,

The boughs drink in new beauty, and the trunk

Sends down a deeper root on the windward side.

Only the soul that knows the mighty grief

Can know the mighty rapture. Sorrows come

To stretch our spaces in the heart for joy.

I saw an old woman stand in the middle of

A barnyard full of screaming chickens.

Her apron was wrapped around her body,

And her eyes were cold and gray, like steel.

Her grey hair was tied  in a bun off of her neck.

She walked like a stevedore with strong legs,

And powerful hips in the morning sunlight.

The sun’s rays bounced off the small hatchet

She carried in fingers shaped like talons.

She hardly glanced at the small child at her side.

The child was riveted by the screaming of the chickens

And wanted her body to be anywhere else, but here.

She could smell the fear of the chickens around her.

She could sense the excitement of the old woman beside her.

The old lady’s lips peeled back from her teeth, yellowed with age,

And with a quick movement, she grabbed a chicken

And snapped its neck with a twist of her strong wrist.

To the child, it sounded like a loud, ungodly crack.

The little girl’s body jerked  as she was being pulled

Closer to the chopping block covered with cuts.

Her tears fell on a face reflecting  sheer terror.

The old lady’s hatchet  hit the back of the neck

Of the limp chicken’s body. spraying the girl

With blood that smelled like an old piece of iron.

The old woman laughed and giggled as the child

Screamed and cried, and ran through the sunlight,

Searching for a hiding place, some place safe to go,

Away from the stink of blood, death, and despair,

And a woman who didn’t feel compassion for anyone.

 WHEN YOU WERE HURTING

I wish I could wipe away your tears,

Erase all of your strongest fears.

It’s hard to know why things occur.

We try our best to just endure

The trials we deal with every day.

We hope, in time, we’ll be okay.

We wonder why, why us, dear Lord?

When we feel we’ve been ignored,

Left to deal alone with loss,

And given such a heavy cross.

We never know when life will end,

Or what’s behind the  next bend.

When Life seems very hard to bear,

Please remember, that we care.
