Why is it that we seldom learn

The value of a friend

Until we strike a mortal blow

Impossible to mend?

Why is it that we fail to see

Concern in gentle eyes

Until we shatter every hope

And ache while friendship dies?

Why can’t we just accept what is

And learn to be content?

Instead we learn to live and love

With such bewilderment.

In the name of pride we do

So many heartless things.

Why can’t we find the time to know

The joy true friendship brings?

We often scorn the gifts of love

And senselessly deny

The feelings that come up inside

Without a reason why.

Is it no wonder that our friends,

The friends of yesterday

Grow weary of our selfish pride

And sadly walk away?
