It must have been lonely
For Christ to realize
No help was coming
His way, and no relief.
He was in this alone,
And felt at times God
Had even abandoned Him.
The weight upon His shoulders
Of the whole world’s plight
Was hard for Him to bear.
So He went to prepare His soul
In the Garden of Gethsemane.
He prayed so hard that
Drops of blood fell from His
Forehead.
He yearned for someone
To sit with Him
As He faced the thought
Of his own death and
The pain He would endure
At the hands of people
He did not know.
Yet no one came
To kneel with Him
That fateful night,
To comfort Him
As He appealed
For God to take this task,
To die a lonely death,
Away from Him.
Such a sacrifice from Christ
Would bring no gratitude
From those who did not know Him.
His friends slept on the ground,
Oblivious to His need
For comfort and relief.
He had always been
The strong one in the group.
I wonder if He ever felt
The inequality
Of giving to those
Who could not
Give to Him.
Yet, He gathered up
His strength,
His courage,
and His love
To go and die for them.
