I wonder why it is
That we can’t let go
Of memories that haunt us
Even though we say, “No.”
It seems in getting distance
And allowing breathing space
Our pain fades more quickly
To allow us some grace.
We want to fix the problem
That existed in the past.
We miss what we remember
And we want to hold fast
To the good that we cherished
From ones who made us feel
All kinds of emotions
And helped us to heal.
We forget the reasons why
We had to go away.
All we seem to think about
Is getting them to stay.
Confused by our emotions,
Our thoughts go round and round.
The tears keep on falling,
Yet we can’t make a sound.
