We all want to be successful in life. We want to make good grades in school, move up in a job we like, pick a partner for life, and raise a loving family. We want to contribute something of value to society, have a wonderful support system, and have enough money to live comfortably. However, our most important successes in life will be those in improving our character; keeping our relationships by good communication, commitment, and sharing; and treating other people with kindness and respect. The following poem illustrates this:  (Yu/stan/kema).

SUCCESS

Success is speaking words of praise,

In cheering other people’s ways,

In doing just the best you can,

With every task and every plan.

It’s silence when your speech would hurt,

Politeness when your neighbor’s curt.

It’s deafness when the scandal flows,

And sympathy with other’s woes.

It’s loyalty when duty calls.

It’s courage when disaster falls.

It’s patience when the hours are long.

It’s found in laughter and in song.

It’s in the silent time of prayer,

In happiness and in despair.

In all of life and nothing less,

We find the thing we call success.

What Matters Is The Person, Not The Creed.

For me, it has never mattered what a person believed in. What mattered is what the person did with the creed he/she took to live by. It is who a person strives to be because of what he/she believes that matters. This poem, written by H.N. Fifer sums it all up nicely: (Yu/stan/kema)

WHAT WAS HER CREED?

What was her creed?

I do not know her creed. I only know

That here below, she walked the common road

And lifted many a load, lightened the task,

Brightened the day for others toiling on a weary way:

This, her only meed; I do not know her creed.

Her creed? I care not what her creed;

Enough that never yielded she to greed,

But served a sister in her daily need;

Plucked many a thorn and planted many a flower;

Glorified the service of each hour;

Had faith in God, herself, and fellow-men;

Perchance she never thought in terms of creed.

I only know she lived a life, in deed!

I believe we are here in this  world, in order to help make it a better place to live. It is our sacred legacy. Every act we commit can make  this a good place or a difficult place to be. The choice is ours. We are human beings and we will not always choose wisely. What is important, is that we try to choose well as many times as we can. There are things that distract us from doing this. Our focus needs to come back to making the world better. If we are committed, our children will benefit from our actions. The following poem says it all. It was written by Alfred Grant Walton.  Yu/stan/kema.

THE WORLD WE MAKE.

We make the world in which we live

By what we gather and what we give,

By our daily deeds and the things we say,

By what we keep or we cast away.

We make our world by the beauty we see

In a skylark’s song or a lilac tree,

In a butterfly’s wing, in the pale moon rise,

And the wonder that lingers in the midnight skies.

We make our world by the life we lead,

By the friends we have, by the books we read,

By the pity we show in the hour of care,

By the loads we lift and the love we share.

We make our world by the goals we pursue,

By the heights we seek and the higher view,

By hopes and dreams that reach the sun

And a will to fight till the heights are won.

What is the place in which we dwell,

A hut or a palace, a heaven, or hell?

We gather and scatter, we take and we give,

We make our world and there we live.

being clean before God, God washing the world, Google+ picture, Jorge Gonzalez Herrera Photography., Poetry by William L. Stidger.

There is a poem written by William L. Stidger that I have always liked. It’s title is,” I Saw God Wash The World.”

It has five stanzas. I  want to share three of them today. For some reason, deep inside of me there resides a strong desire to stand before God being the best I can be. I know He accepts us with all of our imperfections. He accepts me just as I am. But I still want to honor Him by standing clean before Him. These stanzas remind me of that desire.  Yu/stan/kema.

I SAW GOD WASH THE WORLD

I saw God wash the world last night

With His sweet showers on high,

And then, when morning came, I saw

Him hang it out to dry.

He washed each tiny blade of grass

And every trembling tree;

He flung his showers against the hill,

And swept the billowing sea.

………………………………………………

……………………………………………..

I saw God wash the world last night.

Ah, would He had washed me

As clean of all my dust and dirt

As that old white birch tree.

For me to feel like I am whole,

I find these needs within my soul:

A hunger for blue sapphire skies,

A loving look in my friend’s eyes,

Cascading leaves from trees that dance,

A laugh of pure exuberance,

Starlight upon my upturned face,

The loving warmth from an embrace,

A baby held against my breast,

And sweet uninterrupted rest,

A chance to lay my burdens down,

And know that I am heaven bound.

In the declining years that pass,

I find these are the things that last.

Should You Go First

Should you go first and I remain

To walk this road alone,

I’ll live in memory’s garden, friend,

With happy days we’ve known.

In spring I’ll watch for roses red

When fades the lilac blue.

In early Fall when brown leaves call

I’ll catch a glimpse of you.

Should you go first and I remain

For battles to be fought,

Each thing you’ve touched along the way

Will be a hallowed spot.

I’ll hear your voice, I’ll see your smile,

Though blindly I may grope,

The memory of your helping hand

Will buoy me on with hope.

Should you go first and I remain,

One thing I’d have you do;

Walk slowly down that long, lone path,

For soon I’ll follow you.

I’ll want to know the steps you take

That I might walk the same.

For someday, down that lonely road,

You’ll hear me call your name.

The following  poem is another one of my favorites. It talks about loving the rain. I have always loved walking in the rain. One  gets wet, but I like the feel of raindrops on my face and hair. To feel that gentle touch of raindrops is comforting to me. I’ve never walked in a very hard rain, in hail, or in thunder and lightning.  That doesn’t appeal to me at all. But if it is a gentle rain, I love being out in it.      (Yu/stan/kema)

WHO LOVES THE RAIN

Who loves the rain

And loves his home,

And looks on life with quiet eyes,

Him will I follow through the storm;

And at his hearth-fire keep me warm;

Nor hell nor heaven shall that soul surprise,

Who loves the rain,

And loves his home,

And looks on life with quiet eyes.

Afternoon On A Hill.

I will be the gladdest thing

Under the sun!

I will touch a hundred flowers

And not pick one.

I will look at cliffs and clouds

With quiet eyes,

Watch the wind bow down the grass

And the grass rise.

And when the lights begin to show

Up from the town,

I will mark which must be mine,

And then start down.

There’s beauty in the lovely thought

That she will be my friend.

Someone to trust and cherish, too,

On whom I can depend.

A friend who knows right from wrong,

And likes me for myself.

A friend who digs inside  my mind

To cultivate its wealth.

A friend who raises me above

The tears of yesterday

And never fails to let me know

“There’s hope in just today.”

A friend who tells me what she thinks

And seeks to tell the truth.

Who spurs me toward much brighter goals

That lie within my youth.

A friend to love and honor still

No matter if the sky

Be filled with darkness and with clouds

Because I’m doubting why.

A friend who means a great deal more

Than what I can express.

She shows me  deep respect and care,

With heart-felt tenderness.

There’s beauty in the lovely thought

She’ll always be my friend.

Someone to trust and cherish, too,

On whom I can depend.

It seems to me a mystery

How you can go and end

The precious thing a man can give

To him he calls a friend.

Explain to me how you can tell

Someone you love them dear,

Yet never come to their front door,

Or lend a listening ear.

Just tell me how a human heart

Can go away and let

Me face the terrors of the past

And know my face was wet.

Please clarify for me the things

I cannot understand.

How can you say that we are friends,

Yet never lend a hand?

You know your friends by what they do

When trouble is about.

They stay around to help you through

When all the world walks out.

You measure them by simple faith

Which says I’m here to stay

And nothing you can say or do,

Can   make me go away.

They’re interested in how you live

Each day that passes by.

They never make you walk alone

Without a reason why.

It seems to me a mystery

How you can go and end

The precious thing a man can give

To him he calls a friend.
